BYD Targets Double-Digit Sales Growth in India with Local Certification Plans

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is setting ambitious targets for sales growth in India, aiming for double-digit increases in 2026. The company is focusing on obtaining local certification for its vehicles to align with Indian regulatory standards, which will help eliminate current import limitations.

During the launch of its largest showroom in India, a senior executive from BYD announced plans to homologate models like the BYD Seal and BYD Sealion with Indian authorities. This certification would enable BYD to sell these vehicles without the current cap of 2,500 units per year.

Current Market Position

BYD currently offers four electric vehicle models in India: eMax 7, Atto 3, Sealion 7, and Seal. The eMax 7 and Atto 3 are already certified in India, allowing for unrestricted sales. In 2025, BYD's sales surged by 88%, reaching 5,402 units, while the overall EV market in India grew by 77% to approximately 177,000 units.

Future Plans

Rajeev Chauhan, executive vice-president at BYD India, stated that the company expects to achieve at least double-digit growth this year. He indicated that while timelines for the new models remain uncertain, the focus will be on expanding the sales of the Sealion model, which has gained popularity in the market.

Competitive Landscape

As competition intensifies with new entrants in the EV market, including VinFast, BYD is closely monitoring developments. Chauhan emphasized that the company intends to maintain its focus on the premium segment rather than engaging in price wars.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its growth ambitions, BYD faces challenges due to import tariffs of up to 110% on fully built cars, as Chinese investments in the Indian automobile sector are still restricted. This situation necessitates a reliance on imports until local production capabilities can be established.

BYD's strategy aligns with the broader trend among global automakers, such as Suzuki and Hyundai, who recognize the importance of the Indian market in their future growth plans.
