DoorDash has launched a new stand-alone app called 'Tasks' that enables delivery couriers to earn money by completing various assignments designed to enhance AI and robotic systems. Couriers can engage in activities such as filming everyday tasks or recording themselves speaking in different languages.
According to DoorDash, this data is crucial for helping AI and robotic systems better understand the physical world. Compensation for these tasks is predetermined and varies based on the effort and complexity involved.
For instance, one task may require a courier to record themselves washing dishes while wearing a body camera, ensuring that each clean dish is visible for a few seconds before moving to the next. The original audio and video footage collected will be utilized to assess both DoorDash's AI models and those developed by its partners across various sectors.
DoorDash is not alone in leveraging its delivery workforce for AI training. Recently, Uber also announced initiatives allowing drivers to earn extra income through small tasks, including uploading photos for AI training.
Additional Features of the Tasks App
In addition to the stand-alone app, couriers will find new digital tasks listed within the existing Dasher app. These tasks may include helping restaurants showcase their menus by taking photos of dishes or capturing images of hotel entrances to assist delivery drivers in locating drop-off points. Notably, DoorDash's collaboration with Waymo, where couriers are compensated for closing the doors of self-driving cars, is also included as a task.
Ethan Beatty, the general manager of DoorDash Tasks, emphasized that the app aims to provide businesses with insights into on-the-ground operations while offering couriers a flexible way to earn additional income. With over 8 million Dashers available across the U.S., the potential to digitize real-world experiences is significant.
Availability
The Tasks app and in-app tasks are currently available in select regions across the U.S., excluding states like California, New York City, Seattle, and Colorado. DoorDash plans to expand the types of tasks and geographical reach in the future.
