Sarvam Aims for Unicorn Status, AquaExchange Innovates in Shrimp Farming

Sarvam AI is poised to become India's newest unicorn, potentially one of the youngest in the country. The company is currently in discussions to secure up to $250 million at a valuation of $1.5 billion, a remarkable feat for a firm established just 18 months ago.

The Unicorn Ascent: This potential funding round, likely led by NVIDIA, Accel, and HCLTech, would represent a staggering sevenfold increase in valuation in less than two years. NVIDIA's involvement highlights the growing interest of global AI leaders in India's landscape.

India’s Sovereign AI Vision: Founded in 2023, Sarvam is quickly emerging as a leader in India's sovereign AI initiative. At the upcoming 2026 India AI Impact Summit, the company will showcase its flagship products, the Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B, which are designed to support 22 Indian languages and built using a mixture-of-experts architecture.

Beyond Software: Sarvam is also venturing into hardware with its AI-powered smart glasses, Kaze. This strategy indicates a desire to integrate both software and hardware, aiming to control the entire user experience from foundational technologies to the devices themselves.

Deployment Challenges: Despite its ambitious plans and technical capabilities, Sarvam faces challenges. Early feedback from developers points to issues such as the absence of GGUF formats, limited vLLM integrations, and inadequate tooling support. In a fast-paced market, these shortcomings may push enterprises back to established global alternatives.

As the potential funding round progresses, the focus will be on whether Sarvam can leverage this investment to compete with global leaders.

Meanwhile, the ₹35,000 crore shrimp export sector in India has struggled with a lack of formal financing and reliable data, leaving small farmers vulnerable. AquaExchange is stepping in with a data-driven solution.

The IoT Edge: Established in 2020, AquaExchange is developing a comprehensive agritech platform for shrimp farming that includes IoT devices, AI, financing, insurance, and market connections. The startup produces 15 types of IoT devices to monitor shrimp health and optimize feeding.

Utilizing underwater sensors and AI, AquaExchange is transforming shrimp ponds into manageable assets.

Bridging the Fintech Gap: AquaExchange also integrates fintech by providing banks with real-time risk assessments of farms, enabling formal lending in a traditionally underserved sector. The startup is testing disease-based insurance, allowing farmers to claim losses for specific conditions identified by its technology. This holistic approach has allowed AquaExchange to reach 71,000 acres and nearly 6,000 farmers.

Global Expansion: Currently, 80% of AquaExchange's revenue comes from financing and procurement, with plans for its technology division to contribute 25% by 2027. With projected revenues of ₹275 crore for FY26 and recent expansions into Ecuador and Saudi Arabia, the company aims to replicate its shrimp success across other sectors like fish, poultry, and dairy.

As India's startup ecosystem prepares for a significant IPO wave, companies like PhonePe and Zetwerk are among those eyeing the D-Street.
