OpenAI Acquires TBPN, Ensuring Editorial Independence

Synopsis

OpenAI said TBPN will stay editorially independent, retaining authority over its programming, guest lineup, editorial choices, and production schedule. The show will report to Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, and support the company’s communications and marketing efforts beyond the broadcast, while maintaining its original format and autonomy.
ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has acquired online talk show TBPN. However, OpenAI did not reveal the terms of the deal.

OpenAI confirmed that TBPN will remain editorially independent, keeping full control over its programming, guest selection, editorial decisions, and production schedule.

“TBPN will continue to run their programming, choose their guests, and make their own editorial decisions. That’s foundational to their credibility, and it’s something we’re explicitly protecting as part of this agreement,” OpenAI said in a blog.

Announcing the news on social media platform X, TBPN cofounder John Coogan wrote, “The show is staying the same and we’ll continue to go live at 11am pacific every weekday.”

He described it as a “full circle moment.”

“This is a full circle moment for me as I’ve worked with @sama for well over a decade. He funded my first company in 2013…..And as we started growing TBPN last year, he was the very first lab lead to join the show,” he said.

OpenAI said that it aims to foster constructive discussion around the changes AI brings and stated, “...with the mission of bringing AGI to the world comes a responsibility to help create a space for a real, constructive conversation about the changes AI creates—with builders and people using the technology at the center. That’s exactly what TBPN has built.”

The show will report to Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, and also assist with the company’s communications and marketing outside of the programme.

TBPN competes with the likes of Bloomberg and CNBC and is known for its by-the-minute analysis of technology news and executive interviews. WSJ said that under OpenAI, the show will wind down its advertising business, which previously involved cofounders and hosts John Coogan and Jordi Hays reading commercials live and donning racing jackets with sponsor logos.

Launched in October 2024, the 11-person company began three-hour weekday livestreams in March 2025. The company is profitable and generated around $5 million in advertising revenue last year and was on track to make more than $30 million in 2026, the WSJ reported.

WSJ said that although its audience is relatively small (about 70,000 viewers per episode across platforms), the show has become popular among Silicon Valley executives who see it as more supportive of the tech industry than traditional media. Guests have included Meta Platforms’ Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman.
