Information technology (IT) industry body Nasscom on Tuesday said the sector has a zero-tolerance stance on inappropriate behaviour, asserting that employee safety and well-being are ‘non-negotiable priorities.’

The industry body issued this statement in the wake of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) coming under scrutiny following serious allegations of sexual harassment, religious misconduct, and coercion at its Nashik office. In its statement, Nasscom added that such incidents of misconduct, while serious, are isolated and not indicative of a systemic issue in the country’s IT industry at large.

“The Indian technology industry is built on a foundation of respect, dignity, and safety. The industry operates under strict governance frameworks and unequivocal standards for employee safety and workplace conduct. Any instance of misconduct or harassment is treated with the highest degree of seriousness, with organisations taking swift, decisive, and appropriate disciplinary action in line with established processes. Any such incident is isolated in nature and does not reflect a systemic pattern within the industry,” the industry body wrote in a statement.

“Companies across the sector have stricter preventive and redressal mechanisms, backed by clearly defined codes of conduct and full compliance with statutory legal frameworks to ensure that concerns are addressed promptly, fairly, and with due sensitivity. Upholding safe, respectful, and accountable workplaces is fundamental to sustaining a trusted work environment at all levels,” it added.

Responding to the issue, Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran on Monday termed the charges ‘gravely concerning’ and ordered a comprehensive internal probe to be led by TCS chief operating officer (COO) Aarthi Subramanian. The IT services major reiterated its ‘zero-tolerance’ stance on Sunday and has suspended the employees under investigation.

The case first surfaced after a woman filed a complaint at a Nashik police station last month, alleging prolonged harassment by colleagues, including sexual exploitation and repeated hurt to her religious sentiments.

The investigation has since widened, with the police registering nine FIRs based on complaints filed by one male and eight women employees. The complainants have also accused the company’s human resources (HR) department of ignoring repeated complaints. The police have since arrested seven individuals, including senior employees and a female HR manager, while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the matter further.
