Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany has expressed the need for less stringent regulations on industrial artificial intelligence within the European Union. He argues that easing these regulations will significantly boost productivity and efficiency in the sector.
Speaking at the Hannover Messe, Merz emphasized the importance of regulatory freedom for industrial AI, contrasting it with consumer-focused AI, which he believes should remain more tightly regulated. He stated, "I will push to ease the regulatory burden in the EU on AI and, where possible, to exempt industrial AI from the current regulatory straightjacket that is too tight for AI within the European Union."
Merz highlighted that advancements in industrial AI could lead to:
- Increased efficiency and productivity
- Optimized resource use
- Reduced operational costs
Germany's push for a more favorable regulatory environment comes as the country aims to catch up with leading AI nations, particularly the United States and China. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to attract high-income jobs and enhance its technological capabilities.
In line with these goals, the German government recently announced plans to significantly boost AI data processing capacity by 2030, aiming for a fourfold increase. This move is seen as essential for maintaining competitiveness in the global AI landscape.
