The April update for Azure DevOps MCP Servers introduces several enhancements aimed at improving user experience and performance across both local and remote environments.
New WIQL Query Tool: A new tool called wit_query_by_wiql has been launched, allowing users to create and execute work item WIQL queries. Currently, access to this feature is restricted to users with the Insiders feature on the remote MCP to ensure reliability and performance.
MCP Annotations: To facilitate safer interactions with external tools, metadata tags known as MCP Annotations are being implemented. These annotations will provide clarity on how various tools operate, especially those that are read-only, destructive, or openWorld.
Tool Support Expansion: Recent updates have bridged some gaps between local and remote MCP servers by adding support for tools like repo_get_file_content, repo_list_directory, and repo_vote_pull_request. Further enhancements are expected in the coming weeks.
Tool Consolidation: Recognizing the vast scope of Azure DevOps, efforts are underway to consolidate related tools, starting with wiki tools, to improve performance and usability.
Authentication Simplification: Personal access tokens are now supported for authentication, streamlining integration with external services such as GitHub Copilot.
Elicitations for Task Guidance: Elicitations have been introduced to guide users in providing the correct information for tasks, particularly in project selection. However, community demand for this feature has been limited, prompting a trial rollout.
Introduction of MCP Apps: MCP Apps are being tested as an experimental feature that allows users to package and execute common workflows within the MCP Server. This aims to enhance consistency and reduce setup time for tasks like querying or updating work items.
Feedback and Future Updates: The team encourages user feedback on new features and is committed to ongoing updates. Users are invited to share their thoughts and experiences to help shape future developments.
