Meta has rolled out a new feature allowing parents to view the topics their teenagers have discussed with Meta AI over the past week. This update is part of the company's supervision tools available on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram.
Within the supervision hub, parents can access a new “Insights” tab that categorizes discussions into various topics. These topics include:
- School
- Entertainment
- Lifestyle
- Travel
- Writing
- Health and Wellbeing
By selecting a topic, parents can delve deeper into subcategories. For instance, the “Lifestyle” category includes fashion, food, and holidays, while “Health and Wellbeing” encompasses fitness and both physical and mental health.
This feature is currently available in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with plans for a global rollout in the coming weeks.
Meta initially previewed these insights in October, aiming to equip parents with tools to guide their teens in navigating AI interactions. Other proposed features included options to block specific AI characters or disable them entirely. However, following a suspension of teen access to these characters in January, Meta is now focusing on enhancing parental oversight.
In light of recent legal challenges regarding child safety, including a case in New Mexico where Meta was found liable for endangering minors, the company is taking steps to improve transparency. The new insights feature is part of a broader initiative to inform parents about their children's interactions with AI.
Additionally, Meta is introducing suggested conversation starters for parents to facilitate open discussions about their teens' experiences with AI. The company is also launching an AI Wellbeing Expert Council to help shape future AI product developments for younger users.
