Google Translate is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the introduction of a new feature designed to assist users in practicing pronunciation and enunciation of words and phrases in various languages.
Users can access this feature by selecting the “Practice” menu after translating a word, sentence, or phrase. A new “Pronounce” button will provide phonetic guidance, allowing users to vocalize the translated text for practice.
The app evaluates pronunciation accuracy and offers feedback, such as highlighting unclear sounds. Additionally, users can listen to the app’s correct pronunciation of the text.
This feature is currently being rolled out in the United States and India, supporting English, Spanish, and Hindi.
Why it matters: Mastering pronunciation is often a significant challenge for language learners. This new tool provides immediate feedback, helping users improve their speaking skills more effectively.
The pronunciation practice feature shares similarities with offerings from language learning platforms like Duolingo, which also focus on speaking exercises.
In addition to this new feature, Google recently expanded its live headphone translation capabilities, making them available on iOS and Android devices in several countries, including Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
