The Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) has officially commenced its role as the statutory regulator, prioritizing the registration of eSports entities. This move comes as new online gaming regulations take effect.
eSports Registration Portal
A dedicated portal for eSports entities to obtain digital registration certificates is now live. This initiative aims to streamline the registration process for platforms that wish to brand their tournaments as eSports.
Compliance with National Sports Governance Act
Under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, any platform promoting eSports tournaments must register with the OGAI. This registration, valid for ten years, is designed to safeguard developers from potential state-level gambling restrictions.
Application Process and Approval
The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) has developed the registration portal, which is expected to expand its capabilities over time. As applications are submitted, many have already received approval, with certificates issued. The OGAI is committed to preventing real money games from being misclassified as eSports.
Grievance Redressal Mechanism
To enhance public trust in online gaming, the new regulations require all gaming service providers to establish a functional grievance redressal system. Users can escalate unresolved complaints to the OGAI within 30 days, with a further 30 days allocated for the authority to resolve these issues.
Authority Structure
The OGAI, formed following Gazette notifications from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), comprises six members, including representatives from various ministries. The additional secretary of MeitY will serve as the chairperson.
