Speaking on the Nothing But Tech podcast on Saturday, Altman said advances in AI are lowering barriers to building companies, allowing smaller teams and in some cases even individuals to create products and scale businesses.
“One of the most important things about this technology is the entrepreneurship it’s enabling,” Altman said, adding that he wants to be “in the trenches” with early-stage founders building companies with small teams but large access to computing power.
Altman said AI could enable a shift toward smaller, more efficient companies, including “one-person startups” or teams with just a few founders.
“I think now we are going to be in a world where you can have these one-person startups… and the amount of good stuff that’s going to make for all of us will be quite great to see,” he said.
Altman shared that he has recently met founders operating with minimal headcount and significant access to compute resources, reflecting a broader shift in how startups are being built in the AI era.
He attributed the rise in entrepreneurial activity to broader technological change, noting that startup ecosystems tend to expand during periods of major innovation. He compared the current moment to earlier platform shifts, such as the launch of the iPhone App Store, which catalysed a wave of mobile-first companies.
“Startups thrive when there is newness and change in the technological landscape,” Altman said, adding that such moments create more opportunities for new companies to emerge.
