Karnataka Aims to Lead in Commercial Space Economy with New Initiatives

Karnataka is positioning itself as a significant player in the commercial space sector, driven by its ambitious "DeepTech Decade" vision. This initiative includes the establishment of common testing facilities and manufacturing parks to foster innovation and support startups and MSMEs in the burgeoning new-space economy.

During a recent consultation on the SpaceTech ecosystem in Bengaluru, IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge emphasized the importance of SpaceTech as a cornerstone of the state’s deeptech ambitions. He noted that Karnataka is well-equipped to spearhead the next phase of India’s commercial space growth, leveraging its capabilities in innovation, advanced manufacturing, and data-driven services.

Key Initiatives

  • Common Testing Facilities: The proposed Common Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) facility will cater to the functional and environmental testing needs of startups and manufacturers.
  • Public-Private Partnerships: The IT/BT department plans to evaluate land parcels around Bengaluru for advanced testing infrastructure, with development expected to commence soon.
  • Improved Access: Discussions included enhancing access to existing testing infrastructure across government, industry, and academia.

Importance of Space Data

Kharge highlighted that space data is becoming essential for various applications, including agriculture, climate resilience, logistics, and disaster management. He urged for Karnataka to lead in all aspects of the space value chain, not just in launches and innovation.

Collaboration and Ecosystem Development

The consultation brought together diverse stakeholders, including startups, academic institutions, and industry representatives, to discuss strategies for enhancing Karnataka’s SpaceTech ecosystem. Participants explored the development of dedicated manufacturing parks and industrial clusters aligned with the state’s Space Policy.

Future Directions

Officials from the IT/BT department noted that Karnataka was the first state to introduce a draft Space Policy, underscoring its commitment to building a competitive commercial space ecosystem. The policy aims to foster long-term leadership in infrastructure, manufacturing, research, and talent development.

As Karnataka moves forward with these initiatives, the focus will be on strengthening the participation of SMEs in the space supply chain and aligning workforce development with the department’s NIPUNA skilling program.
