Anthropic is considering a massive fundraising round this summer as it looks to significantly expand its computing capacity, according to a report by the Financial Times on Friday. The move could push the artificial intelligence company’s valuation close to $1 trillion, potentially placing it ahead of rival OpenAI.

The report said that Anthropic has been in discussions with investors, including Dragoneer Investment Group, General Catalyst, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, as its revenues continue to climb rapidly.

Anthropic was most recently valued at $380 billion in February. By comparison, OpenAI reached a post-money valuation of $852 billion in March after completing a record funding round worth $122 billion.

Anthropic’s upcoming fundraising could value the company at roughly $900 billion pre-money, with plans to raise as much as $50 billion, the report said, citing sources. The deal could be completed within the next two months.

Krishna Rao, Anthropic’s chief financial officer, has reportedly been holding talks with potential investors. However, the report noted that terms have not yet been finalised and there is still no certainty that an agreement will ultimately be reached.

The report said investors are eager to secure stakes in Anthropic ahead of a blockbuster initial public offering that could take place as early as the end of this year

The report further stated that sources expect Anthropic’s annualised revenue (a projection based on recent weekly performance) to surpass $45 billion shortly. That would represent a sharp rise from $9 billion at the end of last year. The company had revealed last month that its revenue run rate had crossed the $30 billion mark.

In recent months, the AI firm has also entered into agreements with SpaceX, Google, Broadcom, and Amazon Web Services to secure long-term computing power. The report said these deals are expected to add hundreds of billions of dollars to Anthropic’s costs over the coming years.
