Transforming a Garden with Tech: A Personal Journey

Transforming a Garden with Tech: A Personal Journey

Synopsis

Facing challenges with their home's landscape, the author turned to ChatGPT for a personalized gardening plan. Through an iterative process, they specified preferences for non-shedding, mosquito-repellent, fragrant trees, and sun-tolerant plants suitable for California's climate.

Early last year, we went through a full landscape remodel of the house. We struggled with our core landscape design and setting our garden right. We had no idea what to plant for which season or how to do it. Every time we planted, they would die within three months.

This time around we were thinking about getting a landscape consultant. But then ChatGPT became popular around that time. So, we thought, why not give it a try. It was an iterative process for us. The first thing was actually feeding our landscape plan to ChatGPT, which was made by my wife in Figma, and then we asked the AI model to give us a gardening plan based on our preferences. We wanted trees that would grow between 7-8 feet, but not shed leaves because we wanted more privacy. We did not want trees that attract mosquitoes, but ones that smell good.

In addition to this, we wanted to understand the water needs given that California is sunny and wanted plants that can survive the sun. All of these went into prompts, with a lot of back and forth. We also used tools like Nano Banana. We had a Zen garden on the other part of the house and used it to visualise how our garden would look with a Buddha statue.

Prompts used:

Help me create a landscaping plan for my garden. This is how my current garden looks. We want trees that would grow between 7-8 feet but not shed leaves. It should not attract mosquitoes but smell good

We live in California and plants should survive the sunny weather

Where do we put artificial grass and pavements in the garden

We want to create a Zen garden. Help me visualise how this would look like with a Buddha statue given what you know of the landscaping plans?

We want a water fountain and bird bath. How do we map the location and how will this all fit in?
