X is evolving into a more comprehensive content management tool with the introduction of a History tab. This feature aggregates bookmarks, likes, watched videos, and read articles into one accessible location, making it easier for users to revisit their favorite content.
Initially rolling out on iOS, the update was highlighted by X's head of product, Nikitia Bier, who emphasized its role in helping users track and return to content they wish to engage with later.
New Features of the History Tab
The History tab replaces the previous Bookmarks button in the app's left-side menu. It organizes saved content into four distinct sections:
- Bookmarks: Intentionally saved links.
- Likes: Content users have appreciated.
- Videos: Clips watched on the platform.
- Articles: Texts read by users.
This structure allows for quick navigation back to previously viewed content, even if it wasn't explicitly saved.
Implications for User Experience
The consolidation of features enhances the app's usability, resembling the functionality of a web browser where users can easily return to past content. Previously, bookmarks were located in the main menu, while likes were less accessible in user profiles.
Encouraging Long-Form Content
This update may also promote the use of X's long-form article format, which the platform has been advocating as a means for businesses and creators to share more extensive updates beyond the standard post limit of 280 characters. Users can now curate a personalized news feed within the app, tracking articles of interest as they browse.
Context of the Update
The launch of the History tab comes at a time when web publishers are experiencing reduced referral traffic from major platforms like Facebook and Google. X aims to leverage this trend by encouraging more publishers and creators to share content directly on its platform, facilitating built-in distribution and discovery.
