OpenAI has unveiled a new suite of personal finance tools for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States. This feature allows users to link their bank accounts and engage with the chatbot for various financial inquiries, from analyzing spending habits to planning future investments.
In collaboration with Plaid, a financial connection service, users can connect to over 12,000 financial institutions, including major players like Schwab, Fidelity, and Chase. Once linked, users gain access to a comprehensive dashboard displaying their portfolio performance, spending patterns, subscriptions, and upcoming payments.
This launch follows OpenAI's acquisition of the team from personal finance startup Hiro, which has contributed its expertise to enhance the new tools. However, it remains unclear how much of the feature was developed by the Hiro team.
To access these features, users can initiate the process by selecting “Get started” under the “Finances” section in the sidebar or by typing “@Finances, connect my accounts” in a ChatGPT conversation. The chatbot will then provide guidance on linking accounts through Plaid. Future updates are expected to include support for Intuit, which would allow for more complex financial analyses.
OpenAI reports that over 200 million users inquire about financial topics on ChatGPT each month. The latest GPT-5.5 model has been enhanced to improve contextual reasoning, which is essential for addressing finance-related questions effectively. OpenAI collaborated with financial experts to set benchmarks for the model's performance in this domain.
With these new tools, users can receive tailored responses to specific queries, such as assessing recent spending increases or developing a plan to purchase a house within five years.
Users can manage their account connections by navigating to Settings > Apps > Finances. If they choose to disconnect an account, the synced data will be removed from ChatGPT within 30 days. Additionally, users have the option to view and delete financial memories from the Finances page.
As AI companies recognize the need for specialized products in sensitive areas like finance and healthcare, OpenAI's new offering aligns with this trend. Other companies, including Anthropic and Perplxity, are also launching tools tailored to these sectors.
The personal finance tools are currently available to ChatGPT Pro users on both web and iOS platforms. OpenAI aims to refine the product based on user feedback before rolling it out to Plus users.
