Spotify has announced a collaboration with Universal Music Group (UMG) that enables fans to use generative AI technology to create covers and remixes of their favorite songs. This feature will be available exclusively to Spotify Premium subscribers and will include a revenue-sharing model for participating artists.
Details such as pricing and the launch date for this tool have not yet been disclosed. However, Spotify has previously indicated its intention to work with major labels, including UMG, to develop artist-centric AI products.
Spotify emphasized that the development of these AI tools will be based on consent and fair compensation for artists, contrasting its approach with that of other companies in the AI music space.
According to Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström, the initiative aims to enhance the relationship between artists and fans while ensuring that artists receive credit and compensation for their contributions. Norström noted that this collaboration with UMG is part of a broader effort to evolve the music ecosystem.
UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge highlighted the potential for artists to strengthen their connections with fans and create new revenue streams through this initiative. Specific details on which UMG artists will participate are yet to be revealed.
While platforms like Suno and Udio have pioneered AI music creation, they have faced legal challenges from major labels. Spotify's proactive approach in securing a licensing agreement may set a precedent for future collaborations in the industry.
This announcement coincided with Spotify's Investor Day, where the company also unveiled other AI-driven features, including tools for audiobook creation and podcast production.
