Italian financial police recently announced the dismantling of a complex streaming piracy operation that has incurred approximately €300 million in damages to various rights holders, including major platforms like Sky, DAZN, Netflix, Disney+, and Spotify.
The operation focused on an innovative application named CINEMAGOAL, which facilitated illegal access to streaming content by connecting users' devices to foreign servers that decrypted protected material. This system operated through virtual machines located in Italy, which captured and retransmitted access codes from legitimate subscriptions registered under fictitious identities every three minutes.
How the Operation Worked
The CINEMAGOAL application circumvented the security measures of streaming platforms, allowing users to access content without being tied to specific IP addresses, making detection more challenging. Subscriptions to this service were offered at prices ranging from €40 to €130 annually.
Legal Actions and Seizures
In collaboration with the EU judicial cooperation agency Eurojust, prosecutors in Bologna successfully seized foreign servers that housed the decryption data and the source code of the application. Parallel operations were also executed in France and Germany.
Consequences for Users
Additionally, the Guardia di Finanza discovered the use of traditional illegal streaming devices, colloquially known as "pezzotto" in Italy. They plan to issue fines to approximately 1,000 identified users of these pirate systems, with penalties ranging from €154 to €5,000.
