BluJ Aerospace, a deep-tech aviation startup founded in 2022 by former Skyroot Aerospace team members, has unveiled its second-generation prototype of a heavy-payload electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This Hyderabad-based company aims to address logistics challenges in sectors like power transmission, mining, and defense, where transporting supplies to remote areas is often costly and inefficient.
The newly introduced "Gen-2" aircraft is designed to meet certification standards and is a step closer to commercial testing, with a target deployment year set for 2027. Earlier this year, BluJ made headlines as the first Indian entity to successfully demonstrate a flight of a 500-kg-class eVTOL aircraft.
Key Features of the Gen-2 Prototype
- Payload Capacity: Designed to carry up to 200 kg.
- Weight Reduction: Approximately 40% lighter than its predecessor.
- Battery System: Higher-voltage system for enhanced efficiency and thermal management.
- Autonomy: Increased autonomous operation with minimal pilot intervention.
The Gen-2 prototype is currently undergoing crucial "transition flight" testing, which involves shifting from vertical take-off to forward flight, similar to conventional aircraft. This step is vital for the development of eVTOL technology.
Future Plans and Developments
BluJ's modular "VANTIS" architecture allows for the creation of multiple aircraft variants tailored for various logistics needs, from short-range cargo transport to potential regional passenger services. The company emphasizes its focus on cargo movement initially, with plans for passenger transport in the future.
In addition to its battery-powered aircraft, BluJ is also exploring hydrogen propulsion systems for extended-range capabilities. The startup has partnered with BPCL and Cochin International Airport to test hydrogen refueling infrastructure.
Funding and Growth
So far, BluJ has secured $2.25 million in seed funding and is currently seeking additional investments to support its growth. The company aims to increase in-house development, with plans to localize over 75% of its platform components.
Industry Context
The eVTOL sector globally has attracted significant investment, with several companies working on electric aircraft for both passenger and cargo transport. However, challenges remain regarding certification timelines and infrastructure requirements. BluJ's commitment to commercializing cargo transport first positions it strategically within this evolving market.
