Infosys chairman Nandan Nilekani has addressed concerns regarding the impact of automation on traditional tech services. He emphasized that the rise of AI tools has enhanced the relevance of Infosys as it modernizes client technologies to meet new demands.
During his address to shareholders on May 22, Nilekani stated, "More than three years after the launch of Generative AI, we can unequivocally say that Infosys is more relevant than ever." He highlighted the significant shift from predictable machines to probabilistic ones, which is transforming the nature of work.
These remarks come as AI-native firms like Anthropic and OpenAI continue to launch new products at a rapid pace, prompting investors to question the relevance of the IT sector, which has seen a decline in stock prices. Infosys shares have dropped over 28% since the beginning of the year.
Nilekani acknowledged the growing doubts about the necessity of IT services in a world where coding may become automated. He stated, "If coding becomes automated, then why are we needed at all?" This reflects the broader concerns within the industry regarding the future role of tech services.
Despite these challenges, Infosys reported $20.16 billion in revenue last year, marking a 4.6% increase year-over-year. A significant portion of this revenue came from manufacturing clients.
Looking ahead, Nilekani sees potential in the software development lifecycle, emphasizing the need for robust testing, validation, and cybersecurity measures. He stressed the importance of modernizing IT systems for large clients to keep pace with AI advancements.
To adapt to these changes, Infosys plans to equip its workforce with new skills and mental models. Nilekani expressed confidence in the company's ability to prepare its talent for the evolving landscape and to leverage productivity gains to expand its client base.
Infosys currently employs 328,594 individuals, reflecting a growth in its workforce. Nilekani's views resonate with those of other industry leaders, including Tata Consultancy Services chairman N Chandrasekaran, who highlighted the necessity of trust and security in AI implementations.
In a strategic move, Infosys has consolidated its AI offerings under the Infosys Topaz AI Next platform, integrating its software products arm, EdgeVerve. This initiative aims to enhance the company's AI capabilities and market presence.
As the IT services landscape evolves, Nilekani remains optimistic about the opportunities that blending new AI capabilities with existing systems will create.
