A coalition of major e-commerce players in India, including Amazon, Zomato (referred to as Eternal), Meesho, Swiggy, and Zepto, has been formed to address challenges within the digital commerce landscape. This initiative, known as the Digital Commerce Coalition, aims to foster collaboration among stakeholders to enhance the sector.
Notably, Flipkart is not a member of this coalition.
Objectives of the Coalition
The coalition's primary goal is to create a forum for dialogue and research focused on sector-specific challenges. According to a statement released on June 1, the coalition intends to tackle various issues, including:
- Enhancing customer experience and trust
- Supporting delivery partners
- Promoting entrepreneurship and economic participation
- Empowering small businesses
- Improving supply chain efficiency
- Encouraging sustainable growth and responsible innovation
This initiative comes at a time when India's digital commerce sector is experiencing significant growth, particularly in Tier II cities, driven by increased smartphone usage and evolving business models.
Coalition Leadership and Activities
The Koan Advisory Group, a public policy consulting firm, has been appointed as the secretariat for the coalition, responsible for overseeing its research and engagement activities.
Insights from Industry Leaders
Leaders from the participating companies have shared their perspectives on the coalition's significance:
- Eternal: Dr. Jaskiran Bedi, Head of Public Policy, emphasized how digital commerce facilitates convenient consumption and creates new entrepreneurial opportunities.
- Meesho: Prachi Bhuchar, Head of Public Policy, noted that digital commerce has been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurship, especially for small businesses and underserved markets.
- Zepto: Rachit Ranjan, Chief Policy Officer, highlighted the potential of industry collaboration in addressing issues related to MSME access, supply chains, and consumer trust.
Addressing Labour Law Challenges
Concerns have been raised regarding the alignment of existing labor laws with the evolving e-commerce economy. Virjesh Upadhyay, Chairperson of the Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Workers Education and Development, indicated that the current legal frameworks do not adequately support the platform economy.
He stressed the need for a structural redesign of laws to ensure proper welfare and social security for gig and delivery workers, asserting that:
- The legal structure must be adapted to include aggregators and platform workers.
- Ongoing dialogue is essential to develop worker-centric solutions.
- Delivery partners should receive the same rights and welfare as other workers.
- While a uniform national minimum wage may be impractical, earnings should meet basic living standards.
This coalition represents a significant step towards addressing the complexities of the digital commerce landscape in India, fostering collaboration, and advocating for necessary reforms.
