Uttar Pradesh Power Corp Secures Power Supply from Bhutan's Khorluchu Hydro Project

The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) has obtained approval from the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) to source electricity from the Khorluchu Hydro Power project in Bhutan. This initiative aims to bolster the state's energy supplies.

Khorluchu Hydro Power is a collaborative venture between Tata Power, which holds a 40% stake, and Druk Green Power Corporation, which owns 60%. The project is set to generate 511 MW of hydroelectric power.

UPPCL's request to UPERC included a proposal to purchase power at a fixed tariff of ₹6.75 per unit for a duration of 30 years. The regulatory body granted this approval through an order dated May 27.

A power sale agreement between Khorluchu Hydro Power Ltd (KHPL) and UPPCL is anticipated to be finalized soon.

This hydro project is part of a broader plan to develop 1,125 MW of hydroelectric capacity in Bhutan, with an estimated investment of ₹6,900 crore expected to be completed by 2029-2030.

The electricity sourced from Bhutan is expected to enhance regional energy security, support India's transition to clean energy, and address Uttar Pradesh's peak power demands, particularly from May to October.

Tata Power has a diversified energy portfolio, exceeding 26 GW in operational and pipeline capacity, which includes about 17.5 GW of clean energy. The company also boasts an extensive transmission and distribution network, serving nearly 13 million customers.
