Waymo has finalized the acquisition of a substantial 5,500-acre proving ground in Arizona, previously owned by Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, a company linked to Apple. The transaction, valued at $220 million, was officially recorded on June 5 and confirmed by Waymo.
This new facility significantly expands Waymo's existing network of closed test courses. The company continues to utilize other locations, such as the Castle Proving Ground in California and the Transportation Research Center in Ohio, but the Arizona site is notably larger.
Facility Features:
- 115-acre city course
- 35-acre vehicle dynamics area
- 4-mile oval track
- Dedicated freeway course for autonomous vehicle testing
A Waymo representative indicated that the Arizona facility will be instrumental in simulating various driving scenarios, allowing for ongoing testing and enhancement of its self-driving technology. This includes rider-only testing, motion control assessments, and training workflows.
Previously, Apple acquired this property in 2021 for $125 million after years of renting it for its own autonomous vehicle project, known as Project Titan. This initiative was ultimately abandoned in early 2024 after significant investment.
Waymo's Expansion:
Currently, Waymo is in the midst of a fleet expansion, boasting nearly 4,000 vehicles. The company recently introduced its new Zeekr van, aiming to produce tens of thousands of robotaxis annually, including models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
Waymo has established a strong commercial presence in Phoenix and Maricopa County, having initiated testing of its autonomous technology in Chandler back in 2017. This area was the first to launch a commercial robotaxi service, and Waymo has since extended its operations to over ten U.S. cities, including Los Angeles and Atlanta.
