The Karnataka government has introduced 'Kartavya', an innovative attendance management system that utilizes geofencing technology to ensure government employees are present at their designated workplaces. This initiative, developed internally, aims to enhance transparency and accountability within public administration.
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar emphasized the importance of maintaining 100 percent attendance and addressing public grievances promptly during the system's rollout. The previous biometric attendance system allowed employees to mark their attendance and leave the premises, which led to concerns about accountability.

The system is currently operational across 42 government departments, with over 478,000 employees enrolled. The mobile-based system has been well-received, eliminating the need for lengthy queues at biometric machines.
Future Prospects
Kartavya is seen as a model that could be adopted by other states, potentially transforming public sector attendance management nationwide. As Karnataka continues to embrace digital solutions, this initiative represents a significant step towards innovation-driven governance.
