Amazon Now is making a significant move in the Indian market by launching 100 large fulfillment centers across key cities, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. This expansion aims to broaden its product range beyond daily essentials to include electronics and other everyday items, enhancing its competitive edge in the quick commerce sector.
The new fulfillment centers will each span 20,000 square feet, allowing them to store four to five times more products compared to existing centers, which typically hold between 15,000 and 20,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs). This strategic development is timed with Amazon's upcoming Prime Day event in July.
Delivery Speed: Customers will benefit from faster delivery options, with some products available for delivery in as little as 10 minutes, while others may take up to 20 minutes depending on the delivery distance.
Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations at Amazon India, highlighted that the expanded assortment will include items like electronics, fans, and humidifiers, catering to a wider range of consumer needs.
This initiative follows Amazon's announcement in February regarding the launch of 1,000 dark stores across 100 cities, part of a broader commitment to invest $15 billion in India by 2030. In April, the company pledged an additional $233 million to enhance its infrastructure and operational network in the country.
Market Context: The quick commerce sector is becoming increasingly competitive, with rivals such as Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto diversifying their offerings. Analysts note that non-grocery categories now account for 25-30% of sales in this space.
Amazon's aggressive expansion comes in response to rising competition. Flipkart, another major player, is also ramping up its operations, adding nearly 100 stores monthly to its Flipkart Minutes service.
Singh emphasized that leveraging technology for predicting local demand and improving supply chain efficiency will help maintain a leaner cost structure, which is crucial for competing effectively in this fast-paced market.
