Anthropic has formalized a partnership with the Australian government through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing AI safety research and aligning with Australia’s National AI Plan. This agreement was signed during a meeting between Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra.
Key components of the MOU include:
- Collaboration with Australia’s AI Safety Institute to share insights on emerging capabilities and risks.
- Joint evaluations of safety and security, alongside research partnerships with local academic institutions.
- Sharing of the Anthropic Economic Index data to track AI adoption and its economic impact across key sectors.
Initially, the focus will be on critical sectors such as natural resources, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. The partnership aims to enhance AI education and training in the workforce, reflecting the diverse applications of Claude in Australia.
“Australia’s investment in AI safety makes it a natural partner for responsible AI development. This MOU gives our collaboration a formal foundation,” stated Amodei, expressing enthusiasm for the research institutions’ work on improving disease diagnosis and treatment.
Anthropic is also expanding its AI for Science program in Australia, committing AUD$3 million in Claude API credits to four institutions tackling significant challenges:
- The Australian National University will analyze genetic data to address rare diseases.
- The Garvan Institute will accelerate genomic discoveries in collaboration with UNSW and the Centre for Population Genomics.
- Murdoch Children’s Research Institute will enhance its stem cell medicine program.
- Curtin University will utilize Claude for various research projects across disciplines.
In addition, Anthropic is launching a deep tech startup API credit program, offering eligible VC-backed startups up to USD$50,000 (approximately AUD$72,000) in API credits for projects in drug discovery, climate modeling, and more.
This collaboration marks the beginning of a long-term investment in the Asia-Pacific region, with plans to open a Sydney office soon. Further details on the partnership and initiatives will be shared in the coming weeks.
Anthropic is also introducing the Claude Partner Network for organizations assisting enterprises in adopting Claude, as well as The Anthropic Institute to address challenges posed by advanced technologies.
