Creative assets provider Shutterstock announced the launch of its app in ChatGPT on Wednesday, allowing the latter's users to directly access stock images, videos, music, and sound effects.

“Shutterstock’s app ensures that when users discover content needs in ChatGPT, commercial-ready assets are immediately accessible through a trusted, rights-cleared source,” the company wrote in a press release.

This means Shutterstock now acts as a licensed content layer for ChatGPT, so that high-quality, licensable content gets directly embedded into AI-native workflows. Users can simply type in a prompt to retrieve specific images and directly discover content from the Shutterstock app.

Per the release, OpenAI’s ChatGPT users generate over a billion queries per day.

“Our customers trust Shutterstock as a leading source of high-quality, licensable content, powered by sophisticated AI technology. This launch brings commercial confidence directly in ChatGPT, enabling teams to move from discovery to content production,” said Paul Teall, vice-president – marketplace strategy, Shutterstock, in the statement.

This comes amid the company's efforts to revamp its business with AI. Shutterstock now also acts as an end-to-end AI model training partner, unifying data licensing, services, and long-term collaboration under a single provider.

AI-generated creative tools have recently been picking up, providing users with alternatives to these platforms’ licensable images and videos, which require a payment. Rival Adobe Stock introduced AI-powered features, powered by its Firefly family of generative AI models, in 2024.
