“AI may be written in code, but it runs on electricity,” he said, underlining the importance of physical infrastructure in the global AI race.
Google plans to invest $15 billion in the project, making it one of the largest foreign direct investments in India’s history. The facility, being developed with partners such as AdaniConneX, will rely on the same robust systems that power products such as Search, Workspace and YouTube.
Adani also said that his family group has committed $100 billion towards building a comprehensive platform to support India’s AI ambitions. This investment spans energy generation, transmission, digital networks and data centres.
The countries set to lead in the coming years will be those capable of designing advanced systems and sustaining them at scale, Adani added. He also emphasised that India has a clear structural advantage as it moves into a new phase of AI-led growth.
Pointing to current capacity, Adani said, “India stands at approximately 1.3 gigawatts of data centre capacity. Just for context, here today, we are envisioning nearly one gigawatt in a single location. That contrast reflects the scale of transformation ahead.” He also observed that India’s digital entry points have long been centred around Mumbai and Chennai. However, this is beginning to change. With new undersea cable landing infrastructure coming up in Visakhapatnam, the city is emerging as a fresh digital gateway.
Adani further emphasised the importance of affordability in AI adoption. “For AI to transform our economy and society, it must be affordable, and affordability begins with energy. Lower energy reduces the cost of compute, of training new models, and of inference.”
“The true power of AI will be measured by how widely it can be used,” Adani added.
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The event was also attended by Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Ram Mohan Naidu.
