Nvidia's venture capital fund, NVentures, has made its first investment in legal AI by backing Legora, a startup focused on streamlining legal work through technology.
Legora, which originated in Sweden, is positioning itself against the U.S.-based competitor Harvey. The recent $50 million Series D extension follows a previous $550 million round, pushing Legora's valuation to $5.6 billion and marking a significant milestone with over $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
While Legora's valuation is impressive, it still trails behind Harvey's $11 billion valuation, bolstered by substantial investments from Sequoia and other notable firms.
Legora boasts an expanding client base, including prestigious law firms such as Bird & Bird and Linklaters, and claims its platform is utilized by over 1,000 legal teams across 50 markets.
In terms of customer reach, Harvey reports serving 100,000 lawyers across 1,300 organizations, including major firms and corporate legal departments.
Both companies are aggressively pursuing global expansion, with Legora focusing on the U.S. market while Harvey targets Europe. This rivalry has escalated into a marketing battle, as evidenced by Legora's recent campaign featuring actor Jude Law, contrasting with Harvey's partnership with actor Gabriel Macht.
As both startups leverage large language models, the competition for market share intensifies. Recent developments, such as Anthropic's launch of a legal plugin, have raised concerns among legal software companies about potential disruptions.
Despite these challenges, Legora's CEO, Max Junestrand, remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of effective AI application in shaping the legal industry.
