Mumbai is establishing itself as the dominant force in India's data centre industry, with nearly 50% of the nation's capacity located within the city. This trend is attributed to its robust power infrastructure, extensive subsea cable connectivity, and concentration of enterprises.
Sharad Sanghi, founder and CEO of Neysa AI, emphasized Mumbai's pivotal role, stating, "The next wave of AI adoption will be enterprise-led, and Mumbai is where those enterprises are headquartered." This insight was shared ahead of the Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai's (TEAM) two-day event.
Growth of TEAM
Founded in 2022 by Harsh Jain and Aakrit Vaish, TEAM has rapidly expanded from 26 members to nearly 100 startup founders and operators across various sectors. The organization aims to retain tech talent in Mumbai and foster innovation.
Investment Surge in Data Centres
A report from Avendus highlights that the data centre sector has experienced $5 billion in transactions over the past three years, supported by global investors and infrastructure funds. The sector anticipates three to four IPOs in the coming years.
AI Infrastructure Demand
As AI adoption accelerates, the demand for infrastructure is expected to surge, potentially leading to the deployment of 650,000 to 700,000 GPUs in India's data centres over the next five years. This represents a significant investment opportunity estimated at $23 billion.
Challenges in AI Development
Despite the promising landscape, challenges remain. Aakrit Vaish noted that while India boasts over 100 AI startups, a majority of core AI research talent is still concentrated in Silicon Valley, creating a gap in foundational research capabilities.
Job Creation in AI
Naiyya Saggi, founder of Babychakra, pointed out that Mumbai continues to produce a large pool of engineering talent. The city's sectors, including BFSI and healthcare, are increasingly adopting AI solutions. Saggi reported that over 30,000 applications for AI-related jobs were received this year.
Policy Support and Future Outlook
TEAM is collaborating with the Maharashtra government on initiatives to develop AI-focused infrastructure. The Avendus report indicates that over 38,000 GPUs are committed under the IndiaAI Mission, with a significant number allocated for AI workloads.
As the landscape evolves, the need for India-centric models and solutions becomes critical. Founders emphasize that Indian entrepreneurs must act swiftly to leverage their unique advantages in the rapidly changing AI market.
