Venture capital (VC) firm Founders Fund launched Mafia, a game-show, on Thursday, where prominent tech personalities play the popular card game that goes by the same name.

The debut episode features 13 players well-known in the tech space, such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, fitness personality Bryan Johnson, messaging service Signal’s founder Moxie Marlinespike, and virtual reality headset Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey, among others.

The show is hosted by Mike Solana, editor of digital media company Pirate Wires and Founders Fund's chief marketing officer.

Mafia is a party game for 6-20 participants that’s full of drama and deception. It revolves around a smaller group of players (the mafia) secretly trying to eliminate the others, and the tensions that leads to.

Within 24 hours of its release, the show attracted close to a million and a half views on X and over 20,000 views on YouTube but, generated relatively lower engagement in the form of likes and re-posts.

The show reflects a broader trend in the US tech industry, where founders, investors, and companies are increasingly using media platforms to build influence, personal brands, and engage with their audiences directly.

OpenAI's acquisition of TBPN, VC firm Andreessen Horowitz’s launch of 24x7 podcast news show MTS on X, Johnson and Tesla CEO Elon Musk's viral public personalities, all demonstrate how media exposure and audience engagement have become strategic assets.

However, while MTS and TBPN are both rooted in infotainment, Founders Fund's approach differs from those adopted by OpenAI and a16z. The VC firm co-founded by Facebook investor Peter Thiel is experimenting with a format focussed primarily on entertainment.

Viewers can watch the show on platforms such as X and YouTube.
