French startup Mistral AI is reportedly negotiating to raise approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion) at a valuation of around €20 billion. This funding is intended to enhance its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector, particularly against formidable US and Chinese competitors.
Founded in 2023 by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta, Mistral aims to establish itself as a key player in the European AI landscape. The company focuses on providing AI infrastructure tailored for European governments and industries, including cloud-computing facilities in France and Sweden.
Current Funding Discussions: The discussions with potential investors are in the early stages, and the terms may evolve. Mistral's valuation could increase based on investor interest. Previously, the company was valued at €11.7 billion during a funding round in September.
Strategic Partnerships: Mistral has recently formed partnerships with major European industrial firms, such as Airbus and BMW, promoting its AI services designed for engineering and manufacturing processes.
Market Position: Despite its efforts, Mistral's offerings have not gained as much traction as those from competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. Both OpenAI and Anthropic are preparing for public offerings, with significant valuations that highlight the competitive landscape.
Future Plans: Mistral is also exploring opportunities to provide European banks with alternatives to existing AI models, particularly in cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of controlling such technology for national security reasons.
Earlier backers of Mistral include France's state bank, Bpifrance, and several prominent US venture capital firms.
