Aurora Innovation has secured a deal with McLane, a major distribution company, to operate driverless trucks on routes between Dallas and Houston. This partnership follows a successful multi-year pilot program that demonstrated the viability of Aurora's autonomous vehicle technology.
As part of the agreement, trucks equipped with Aurora's self-driving system will transport goods without a human safety driver onboard. However, a 'human observer' will be present in the cab, as stipulated in the agreement with truck manufacturer Paccar.
Expansion Plans
Aurora aims to extend its operations to additional routes connecting McLane distribution centers across the U.S. Sun Belt by the end of 2026.
Pilot Program Insights
The collaboration began with a pilot program in 2023, which included autonomous trucks with a human safety operator. This pilot expanded to two daily round trips between Dallas and Houston, and McLane has now authorized full driverless operations, which operate seven days a week.
Operational Strategy
The innovative approach involves using Aurora's driverless technology for the long-haul segments of the journey, after which a McLane truck driver will take over for local deliveries. This handoff occurs at terminals in Dallas and Houston, conveniently located near the freeway.
Recent Achievements
This commercial contract marks a significant milestone for Aurora as it transitions from a technology developer to a commercial operator. The company previously launched its self-driving truck service in Texas and has since secured additional contracts, including one to transport frac sand for Detmar Logistics and an agreement with Hirschbach Motor Lines for 500 Aurora-powered trucks.
