Apple has reached a $250 million settlement in a class action lawsuit concerning the marketing of its AI features prior to the launch of the iPhone 16. The lawsuit claimed that Apple misrepresented the capabilities of its Siri assistant, leading consumers to believe that advanced features would be available sooner than they actually were.
The plaintiffs argued that Apple overstated both the functionality and readiness of these AI enhancements, particularly regarding Siri, which have not yet fully materialized. This misrepresentation, they claimed, constituted false advertising, as it influenced purchasing decisions for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 based on incomplete or delayed features.
Although Apple has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the company opted for a settlement to avoid further litigation. Under the agreement, eligible U.S. customers who purchased the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, may receive up to $95 per device.
Since unveiling Apple Intelligence in 2024 at WWDC, Apple has been promoting an upgraded version of Siri that aims to enhance its functionality to resemble modern AI chatbots. Speculation suggests that these updates may be powered by Google Gemini, with future iOS versions allowing users to select from various third-party large language models.
This settlement comes just ahead of Apple's annual developer conference on June 8, where the company is expected to showcase the anticipated AI-enhanced Siri.
