Rani Kapur, mother of the late Sunjay Kapur, has approached the Supreme Court with a request to prevent a board meeting associated with a disputed family trust. This legal action follows the court's appointment of former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud to mediate a significant family dispute valued at ₹30,000 crore.
During a recent court session led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala, the gravity of the situation was acknowledged, with the judge stating, “We have entered into an arena. The Mahabharata will look very small.” The court has scheduled a hearing for May 14.
The application, as reviewed, seeks to restrain Priya Kapur, Rani's widow, and other respondents from making changes to the management structure, appointing new directors, altering bank signatories, or making financial decisions that could affect the estate during the mediation process.
Rani Kapur contends that the planned board meeting on May 18 for Raghuvanshi Investment Pvt. Ltd. (RIPL) is a maneuver to shift control of the family businesses and circumvent the mediation process. She claims that the meeting is being convened with ill intent to usurp the family estate.
In her plea, Rani highlighted that the notice for the board meeting was issued just a day after the mediation order, suggesting a coordinated effort to undermine her control over the trust-linked entities. The proposed resolutions are viewed as attempts to consolidate power and financial control, which could lead to irreversible changes.
Specific agenda items under scrutiny include changes to bank account signatories at major banks, broad transaction powers, and the appointment of new individuals to manage investments. Rani has also raised concerns about the appointment of independent directors and reconstitution of key committees, which she believes are designed to exclude her from governance.
This dispute is part of a broader succession conflict following Sunjay Kapur's death in June 2025. Rani has previously challenged the legitimacy of the RK Family Trust, alleging it was created under questionable circumstances when she was vulnerable after a medical incident.
Rani claims that her involvement and access to crucial company records have been obstructed, further complicating the succession battle. The RK Family Trust controls significant assets linked to the Sona Group, and Rani alleges that its structure favors Priya Kapur and her relatives, effectively sidelining her interests.
