As the first anniversary of the AI-171 plane crash approaches, Air India has communicated to Radhika Rupani, daughter of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, that the families of victims are not under any pressure to accept compensation. The airline emphasized that families can wait for the investigation's conclusion before making decisions regarding financial support.
In a letter to Rupani, Air India stated, "Our offer of final compensation did not set out any timetable for acceptance. Families are entirely free to wait until the investigation report has been released, as some have chosen to do." This reassurance comes amidst concerns raised by Rupani regarding the transparency of the compensation process.
Radhika Rupani previously reached out to Tata Sons' chairman, N Chandrasekaran, expressing her need for clarity and answers from the airline. She highlighted that the documents provided to families require them to waive future claims against Air India before the investigation is complete, prompting her call for greater transparency and closure.
Air India reiterated that families should not feel compelled to choose between immediate financial aid and waiting for the investigation results. The airline began disbursing interim compensation shortly after the accident to assist families with immediate needs while the final compensation assessment was underway.
The tragic crash on June 12, 2025, resulted in the loss of 260 lives shortly after the Boeing 787 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad, bound for London Gatwick Airport.
Understanding the Compensation Documents
Air India clarified the purpose of the Receipt, Discharge & Indemnity document that families are asked to sign. The airline explained that the broad language in the document is designed to ensure that settlements are final and to protect against any future claims from other family members or related parties.
Family Reflections on Loss
Rushabh Rupani, son of the late Vijay Rupani, shared the family's ongoing struggle with their father's sudden passing. He remarked, "My father is remembered in countless small moments... It’s not easy for anyone. We, as a family, have lost a guide, a mentor, and a pathfinder."
To honor his father's legacy, Rushabh has established the 'Shri Vijay Rupani Memorial Foundation' in Rajkot, focusing on youth and women's empowerment and social upliftment. He expressed the foundation's mission to channel his father's ideals into positive societal contributions.
In alignment with the philosophy of 'Antyodaya' as defined by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, the foundation aims to adopt a society-centered approach in its initiatives across education, healthcare, and community development.
